A refrigerator that is not cooling is urgent in Houston, where ambient temperatures mean food can reach unsafe temperatures within a few hours if the appliance fails. 1. Check the Temperature Settings
It sounds basic, but accidental temperature dial adjustment is genuinely common — particularly in households with children or after the refrigerator has been moved or cleaned. 2. Check the Condenser Coils
On most refrigerators built in the last twenty years, the condenser coils are on the back or underneath the unit. 3. Listen for the Evaporator Fan

This is a common and straightforward repair.
4. Check for Ice Buildup Behind the Freezer Wall
If the freezer has ice built up on the back panel, the defrost system has likely failed. The refrigerator will eventually warm up as the ice completely blocks airflow. The short-term fix is to unplug the refrigerator for 24 hours with the doors open to let it fully defrost. This tells you whether it is a defrost system fault (the problem returns after you restore power) or something else.
5. Check the Door Seals
A door gasket that no longer seals properly lets warm, humid Houston air into the refrigerator continuously. The appliance runs without stopping, the interior stays warmer than the set temperature, and condensation builds up inside. Test the seal by closing the door on a piece of paper and pulling — there should be resistance. If the paper slides out easily, the gasket needs replacing.
