An ice maker that has slowed to a trickle or stopped completely is almost always a water supply or fill-valve problem, a frozen supply line, or a worn ejector motor — not the whole refrigeration system failing. Why is my ice cloudy or small?
Usually a low or inconsistent water supply — a partially closed shutoff valve or a filter overdue for replacement — rather than a fault with the ice maker itself. We check supply pressure before replacing any parts.
Freestanding undercounter ice makers are a separate service from the ice maker built into your refrigerator — different water paths, different diagnostics, different parts. We handle both. For built-in refrigerator ice makers, the inlet valve solenoid and the ice maker module itself are where most failures land. For undercounter machines, the evaporator and the harvest cycle controls are the first checks.
My ice maker is making small or hollow cubes – what is wrong?
Undersized or hollow cubes usually mean the water fill is too short — either a partially closed supply valve, a weak inlet solenoid or a plugged filter. It is a straightforward repair once the water flow is measured, and rarely requires replacing the ice maker assembly itself.
A filter change every six months and a quick check of the inlet valve hose for scale buildup prevents most of the ice maker calls we go out on. We walk you through the maintenance schedule while we are there — it takes a few minutes and often prevents the next service call.
